17 January/February 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Students from Ohio high schools gathered for two days to attend the Ohio Green Industry Association's Ohio High School Landscape Olympics (OHLO) to test their skills by competing in events designed by industry professionals. Commercial Landscape Service's Cleveland territories; Davey Resource Group Ohio engineering; the Akron, Canton, East Cleveland, Northeast Cleveland, West Cleveland, and Youngstown Residential/Commercial offices; along with recruiting, came together to sponsor the event, distribute gift bags to students, and hosted a surveying event. The OHLO allowed Davey to connect with students and aspiring industry leaders. Davey's surveying event allowed students to compete and learn how to determine the elevation, or slope, between two points and how that can benefit and be useful for industry professionals. "I was really impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm the kids had," Daniel Engle, project surveyor, Ohio engineering, said. "They had a drive and passion for what they were doing, and I really liked interacting with them." Attendees were all project managers from across the Western Government projects accounts that were interested in learning more about the administrative side of being a leader. "They really broke down how to do certain things to set yourself up for success," Alex Pryer, project manager, Ellsworth AFB territory, said. "The training has helped me better navigate some of the daily work I have as a project manager." Both Pryer and Jeff Oehlerking, project manager, Warren AFB territory, said they felt each speaker and their presentations were thoughtfully done. CLS PROJECT MANAGER WEST TRAINING "I was able to get to know a lot of the other project managers and see that we had a lot in common," Oehlerking said. "It was really nice to see that and meet a lot more people within Davey."
