16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2024 A root excavation training, hosted at the headquarters of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was organized by George Barth, assistant district manager, Hartney Greymont, a Davey company Needham office. Attendees were from Northeast Residential/ Commercial offices, and training instruction was provided by the Davey Institute. The one-day event showcased hands-on techniques in analyzing the root systems of a tree and how to excavate and care for the roots, including a demo on how to use Arborjet's Air Knife to remove compacted soil around the trees. HANDS-ON ROOT EXCAVATION TRAINING USES AIR KNIFE "You never use the word guarantee with trees," Devin Page, sales arborist, Hartney Greymont, a Davey company Concord office, said. "But this training added a level of confidence that will ripple through the day-to-day. It makes you realize it's not just about taking care of a tree's canopy, but also the roots and soil, and the relationship between the two." Steve Kendall, district manager, Hartney Greymont Needham office, said, "The importance of keeping employees on the cutting edge of tree preservation practices puts Davey in a stronger position to succeed in a market that calls for the delivery of a diverse range of services, and gives us the ability to serve our clients at the highest level." LEADERSHIP Facilitator Adam Cervin, market manager, New England region; instructor Chris Fields-Johnson, technical advisor, Davey Institute; along with attendees Dan Hager, district manager, Hartney Greymont, a Davey company Concord office; Steve Mercer, district manager, Hartney Greymont Cape Cod office; and Jon Quinn, trimmer trainee, Hartney Greymont Needham office, are pictured performing soil tilling on a large sugar maple at the headquarters of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Additional employees attended from Hartney Greymont Boston North Shore, and Chippers, a Davey company Enfield offices. A third module of the Advanced Arborist training series included field and classroom training on best practices and techniques, safety, and teamwork when rigging a tree for removal for Northeast R/C offices. Twelve attendees from the Albany; Buffalo; Chippers, a Davey company Enfield; Chippers, Meredith; Chippers, Woodstock; Hartney Greymont, a Davey company Concord; Long Island; Needham; New Jersey; and Stamford offices attended the training at Camp Mattatuck in Plymouth, Connecticut. Nestor Reyes, foreman, Long Island office and Tyler Martin, trimmer, Buffalo office said it was both their final and favorite module in the training series. "One of my favorite things from the training was using the Good Rigging Control System for a group competition where we had to lift a bucket of water without spilling it," Martin said. "It was a fun way to learn the system and it got everyone involved." Reyes also enjoyed that everyone was involved throughout the module. "The training helped me understand the why's behind rigging and the reasons we do the things the way we do them," Reyes said. "I was able to take that and other skills I learned from each module and include them into my everyday job." RIGGING IS FOCUS OF ADVANCED ARBORIST TRAINING Left: Nick Carson, trimmer, Chippers Meredith office; Leonel Correia, groundperson, Hartney Greymont Needham office; and Corey Shepard, arborist skills trainer, Davey Institute, are pictured using a 5:1 mechanical advantage system, a technique used to lift a tree limb away from an obstacle.
