30 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2023 DAVEY AROUND THE WORLD Send us a photo of you holding a copy of The Bulletin on your next adventure to bulletin@davey.com. We'll do our best to feature it in an upcoming Davey Around the World! MISSION TRIP TO HONDURAS Josh Maudlin, account manager, Austin Energy account, Davey Tree Surgery Company, recently went on a mission trip to Honduras with his daughter, Ahna, to provide support in multiple villages. Both are pictured with the Bulletin in front of Palmerola International airport. Maudlin has participated in many past mission trips to Mexico throughout his life. This trip was the first time his daughter joined him, as part of the organization's encouragement for high school seniors to participate during their spring break. He plans to bring his son on an upcoming mission trip in March. "We interacted with close to 700 kids and their families," Maudlin said. "It's just awesome to see them light up and get to connect with that many people." Maudlin said they were able to give out about 1,000 pounds of beans and rice amongst multiple small, Honduran villages, as well as lead and participate in bible studies across the village's schools. "We are investing in the communities of these countries, just like Dav- ey does in the states," Maudlin said. "We get to plant the seed within these lives and hope it will grow." Thanks for taking us with you, Josh! BREATHTAKING VIEWS AT BIG BEAR LAKE During his downtime, Ryan LaValle, geospatial analyst, Davey Resource Group (DRG), Utility Vegetation Management services, visited Big Bear Lake (pictured) and Sugarloaf Mountain located in Big Bear, California while on a DRG drone service project. LaValle has been visiting Big Bear for the past two years and has been working on the project for the past three years, flying drones and taking thermal imagery of the area. In addition to his work, LaValle explains he was able to hike trails, visit his sister and brother-in-law, who live on the backside of the mountain, and see the snowcapped mountains transform as the spring weather came in. "The landscape there is something I've only experienced when watching Hollywood movies," LaValle said. Thanks for taking us with you, Ryan! Growth Rings: A History of The Davey Tree Expert Company tells the story of the events that transpired leading to the employee acquisition of Davey Tree in 1979 and is based on interviews with more than 50 employees, including Davey's most recent three chief executives Doug Cowan, Karl Warnke and Pat Covey, members of the Davey family, recorded interviews with former employees and retirees, information from company publications, and research from several historical archival collections. The story of Growth Rings starts in 1961, picking up where the book Green Leaves, originally published in 1977 as an early history of the Davey Company, ends chronologically. Growth Rings chronicles the success of the employee-ownership model at Davey and the company's exponential growth following the employee acquisition through 2020.
