16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2023 The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Virginia Tidewater Residential/ Commercial (R/C) services markets held combined Davey Institute of Horticultural Sciences (D.I.H.S.) training session and intern development days. The D.I.H.S. training was a weeklong event for each market and included classroom learning in the mornings with hands- on field work based on plant health care in the afternoon. "We were with a bunch of like-minded people, passing around ideas to find out what works for all of our different offices and getting insight on what can be done better," said Mid-Atlantic Virginia Tidewater D.I.H.S. attendee Leah Cort, S&S technician, Charlottesville office. Attending interns could watch the training at their respective locations and network with the attendees at dinner. Interns also learned more about Davey careers, got hands-on experience with equipment and received an intro to climbing. COMBINING D.I.H.S. TRAINING AND INTERN DEVELOPMENT DAY "I appreciated how many people I got to meet within Davey and tips on my potential career path after graduation," intern Madison Norman, trimmer, North Virginia East office said. "It was so nice to meet interns my age, as well as female interns I could share my experience with." "I think on a personal level, it's been a really good opportunity for me over the years to get to network with other people and be able to take back the skills we learn to my office," Libby Bower, trimmer, Chicago office said. Alex Guest, trimmer, South St. Paul office, said the workshop gave people the opportunity to diversify their skillset with experiences they may not experience in their day-to-day work. "It's definitely a really amazing workshop just based on the respect from the trainers and volunteers," Guest said. "Everybody who put the workshop together exceeded expectations. You could tell a lot of care went into planning it." UNITING DAVEY EMPLOYEES AT ILLINOIS WORKSHOP The workshop was able to host around 45 attendees from Residential/Commercial services including managers and employees from the Barrington, Chicago, Crystal Lake, Lake Bluff, Mokena, North Milwaukee, Naperville, Near North Shore, North Detroit, North Minneapolis, Nothwest Detroit, South Minneapolis, South St. Paul, Southeast Milwaukee, Toledo, West Chicago, and Wheeling offices, as well Davey Resource Group.
