31 September/October 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN DAVEY AROUND THE WORLD Send us a photo of you holding a copy of The Bulletin on your next adventure to bulletin@davey.com. We'll do our best to feature it in an upcoming Davey Around the World! PROFESSOR BECOMES THE STUDENT IN THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS Dr. R.J. Laverne, manager, education and training, Davey Institute, enrolled as a freshman at Kent State University this past summer to take a 10-day biology course in the Galápagos Islands. He is pictured holding the Bulletin next to a saddle-back giant Galápagos tortoise. Laverne was able to live out a childhood dream, while he and other Kent State students and faculty spent their days working closely with naturalists and researchers to get an up-close look at the unique and rare vegetation and wildlife of the volcanic islands that make up the protected national park of Ecuador. In addition to being able to see everything from the prehistoric-looking marine iguanas to the curious Galápagos penguins, Laverne was grateful he also got to experience the islands' culture and native people. "Whatever place it is that excites or intrigues you, whether it's the Galápagos Islands, Antarctica or any place in between – if you get an opportunity to take a trip there, take it, because you only get one lifetime," Laverne said. Thanks for taking us with you, R.J.! EMPLOYEE VISITS DAUGHTER IN AUSTRALIA Peter Orszulak, sales arborist, Stamford office, recently took a trip with his wife Philippa to visit Australia where their daughter, Sydney was studying abroad. They are pictured here holding the Bulletin on Bondi Beach in New South Wales, Australia. They were able to take a cruise to travel and see everything from the peaks of Australian mountains to the picturesque waterfalls and expansive coastal beaches. Philippa and Sydney were even able to take surfing lessons in the crystal-clear waters. "Everyone I work with from Davey knew that our daughter was going to school there, so they encouraged us to go out and visit her," Orszulak said. Although this was Orszulak and his family's first cruise, they enjoyed it so much they are currently planning their next one to visit Alaska. Thanks for taking us with you, Peter!
