FROM THE ARCHIVES – AN EYE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography has
played an important
role throughout the
history of The Davey
Tree Expert Company.
Interesting visuals of
trees and Davey work
go all the way back to
our company founder,
John Davey.
John loved taking
photographs, which
he employed at great
lengths in his book
The Tree Doctor. First
published in 1901,
The Tree Doctor
included 175 photographs used to illustrate proper tree
care. A later addition grew to include 213 photographs.
Another avenue where John leveraged his passion
for photography was in his lectures. He frequently
spoke to large, public audiences about tree care,
and he used glass slides displaying photos of trees
and tree care to illustrate his talks. Today, the company

retains more than 400 of John's original glass slides in
the historical archives.
John was highly sought after for his presentations, and
in 1908 he was invited by George Eastman, inventor of
the Kodak camera, to speak to an audience of prominent,
wealthy citizens in Rochester, New York. The lecture led
to a boom in Davey tree care provided to estate owners
in the region.
Coincidentally, years later in 1971 the Eastman Kodak
Company partnered with Davey on a massive landscape
installation project spanning 21 acres at the camera
company's marketing and education center in Henrietta,
New York.
