17 July/August 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN The Davey President's Council came together for a day of service at the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio's Camp Ledgewood. The camp covers more than 350 acres of woodland, situated in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Peninsula, Ohio. The President's Council spread wood chips, pruned trees through hiking trails and along the camp's roadside, and planted trees and flowers. The wood chips were provided by Eric Phillips, assistant district manager, Akron office. Kevin Marks, operations manager, Western operations, Residential/Commercial services, said the group carefully considered what type of work they would be able to perform with the equipment and time they had available. "We made a game plan based on our ability to perform the tasks safely," Marks added. Nominated and selected by their peers to serve a three-year term, the President's Council engages in communications PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL VOLUNTEERS AT GIRL SCOUT CAMP to understand and build relationships between Davey's operating and administrative segments, identifies, and discusses business challenges, and gains a better understanding of the company's objectives, values, and long-term vision. The council is led by Pat Covey, Davey chairman, president, and CEO. Don Viers, area manager, Eastern Utility services, led a one-day training with 119 employees on the NIPSCO and Northeastern REMC accounts, held at Shanklin Park in Goshen, Indiana. The employees rotated through four training sessions in groups. The sessions covered traffic control, aerial rescue, Factors and Forces, and climbing systems and techniques. "The main objective of this training is to improve safety for the employees," Viers said. Chris Lemasters, general foreman, NIPSCO account, noted several new employees joined just in time to participate in the NIPSCO training. "They learned a lot about temporary traffic control, including self-regulatory traffic. Just because there's a double yellow line doesn't necessarily mean flaggers are needed, depending on the speed limit, curves, and hills, and whether traffic is able to self-regulate," Lemasters said. Eduardo Medina, arborist skills trainer, Davey Institute, taught Factors and Forces. "Eduardo showed us different trees, one with lightning damage and one that had rotted in spots due to water making a cavern in the tree. He did a fantastic job," Lemasters said. "The training as a whole was a tremendous learning experience for everyone."
