SOUTH DENVER OFFICE EMPLOYEE PRESENTS RESEARCH
When Joseph Sulpizio, PHC technician, South Denver
office, was completing his final semester in 2022 as an
environmental analysis major at Pitzer College in Claremont,
California, a severe windstorm hit the city. Seventy-two
mph winds struck down more than an estimated 300 trees,
including 11 trees on Pitzer's campus.
The windstorm inspired Sulpizio's research project which
incorporated a Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
tree inventory of every tree on Pitzer's campus into decision
making with fellow community members on the future of
Pitzer's urban forest. Sulpizio created the 496 tree ArcGIS
inventory to help answer the question
of why some tree species fell and not
others. His research work continues
to guide Pitzer's reforestation efforts
towards a more climate-resilient
urban forest.
Sulpizio presented his research at
the 2023 American Association of
Geographers Annual Meeting in the
spring. "It was a great opportunity to

share my research, and the critical importance of trees,"
Sulpizio said.
In 2021, Sulpizio took a gap year as the school year was
going to be held remotely, and he preferred to attend in
person. During that gap year, he spent two and a half
months as an intern at the Menlo Park office. "What I
learned during the internship greatly informed me on how
to conduct the project, better equipped me to present and
I gained more knowledge in the field of forestry," Sulpizio
said. "And now, with my PHC technician position at the
South Denver office, I'm building on that knowledge."
EXPERTISE
''
I appreciate the constant training and support
we are provided at Davey. I never feel rushed,
and I am always being encouraged to do things
correctly. The knowledge and training Davey
provides has opened my eyes to new ideas
and makes me think not only of my own safety,
but also the safety of the public, my teammates
and my family, who are waiting for me at the
end of each day.
