FAMILY, QUILTING AND COMMUNITY SERVICE FILL RETIREE'S TIME
Sue Straub retired from Davey with 24 years of service in
March 2020. Straub was senior supervisor, administrative
services, at the corporate office in Kent.
Straub led the teams covering the front desk at the
corporate office, and corporate mail room. "When I was there,
administrative services handled the scanning of personnel
records, and the service award program. We helped with
HR group benefits mailings, the annual United Way drive,
and other community service projects. We helped the
Treasury department with tax form mailings and company
stock mailings as well as helping the Safety department
with their annual Safety Honor Road mailing," Straub said.
The variety in her role is one reason Straub enjoyed it, but
she also liked interacting with people. "Working at Davey
was wonderful, and the people were so nice to work with.
I've known many of them for a long time now," Straub added.
Sue and her husband Conrad have a daughter, two sons, as
well as one granddaughter and four grandsons. "They keep

us busy. We love it. We go to soccer and basketball games.
Our granddaughter is in the Ballet Theatre of Ohio and is
also in track and field. I'm glad I have time to enjoy being
with them," Straub said.
Straub enjoys quilting and has been sewing for as long as
she can remember. "My mom and grandma got me into
that. Now that I'm retired, I can really enjoy that creative
hobby. I usually spend time in my sewing room every day.
I took an online course to learn free motion quilting, and
Conrad surprised me with a longarm quilting machine when
I graduated from that class," Straub said.
Straub is part of a quilting guild. Her guild makes quilts, place
mats, and mug rugs, and donates them to Portage County's
Children's Advocacy Center and Center of Hope. "We try to
bring a little sunshine into somebody's life," Straub said.
RETIREE CORNER
ADVICE FROM SUE STRAUB:
1. Always do your best, no matter what.
2. If you make a mistake, don't be afraid to say
you're sorry. Own it and move forward.
3. Keep a sense of humor – a lot of people have
lost that!
4. Listen to people. Don't be so busy that you're
not hearing what others are really trying to say.
5. Buy stock. It makes you feel part of the company
and makes you feel more responsible to do a
good job, every day.
6. Keep an optimistic, positive attitude.
When Sue and Conrad Straub lived in West Fargo, North Dakota, they
purchased this 1973 Ford Mustang convertible in 1974. "It's our toy.
We've kept it all these years," Straub said.
