19 January/February 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN CLS CELEBRATES A QUARTER CENTURY CLIENT RELATIONSHIP Davey has maintained the grounds of Peterson Space Force Base (SFB) for more than 25 years. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Peterson SFB is home to Space Base Delta 1, which supports North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Space Command, and more than 100 additional mission partners. The base's landscaping is maintained by 12 Davey PERSEVERANCE FOREST SERVICE REAFFIRMS DAVEY I-TREE ® PARTNERSHIP The cooperative partnership in research and development that has powered the i-Tree ® suite of software tools has been renewed by the USDA Forest Service (USFS) and Davey. Davey Chairman, President and CEO Pat Covey and Forest Service Chief Randy Moore signed a memorandum of un- derstanding that renews and expands the i-Tree partnership. i-Tree can be used to analyze urban forests to assess and quantify the benefits trees provide. The software suite helps communities improve the management of their urban forests and strengthen their advocacy efforts. Linda Heath, acting deputy chief, research and development, USDA Forest Service, said many users are looking to the Forest Service to support the continuing development of i-Tree as the gold standard for estimating benefits of trees and community forests in the U.S. and across the globe. "It's an absolutely essential tool to have, and therefore it's very important for the Forest Service to support research that has such a wide usage," Heath said. "And there's so much of a need for it. The fact that it's free and anyone can use it, and it's available in multiple languages and calibrated around the globe underscores its importance." i-Tree was first released in 2006. Today, the tools are accessed by more than 600,000 users in more than 160 countries around the world. Heath said she encourages local, state and national organizations to learn about the many capabilities i-Tree has to understand how it can be used to benefit their communities. Davey Chairman, President and CEO Pat Covey signs an agreement with USDA Forest Service Chief Randy Moore to renew and expand i-Tree. The i-Tree suite of software tools calculates the structure, function and value trees provide. i-Tree was developed through a cooperative initiative between Davey, the Forest Service, Arbor Day Foundation ® , Society of Municipal Arborists, SUNY-ESF, International Society of Arboriculture ® and Casey Trees ® . Also pictured is Davey's Scott Maco. Commercial Landscape Services (CLS), Peterson Space Force Base territory employees. Blane Pshigoda, vice president of operations, CLS, has been directly involved with keeping that relationship going from day one. "Government client bids go out every three to five years. For a contract to be kept at a base this long is a huge milestone," Pshigoda said. The maintenance of Peterson SFB's grounds includes mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, aeration, irrigation, sod, seeding installation, and snow removal for: • 483 acres of turf • 13,500 shrubs and perennials • 12,000 trees • 100 acres of rock and mulch beds Left: Walker's Low catmint has been planted in front of the Spanish House, built in 1929 as part of the Colorado Springs Airport complex at Peterson SFB. Today, the home is used to house distinguished visitors. The catmint, a perennial, was chosen as the base is committed to water conservation and is under water restrictions due to its semi-arid, above 6,000 feet location. It is a popular choice in xeriscape beds.
