Barb Haskins, support coordinator, corporate
communications, had a stroke nearly a decade ago.
"I woke up as I was falling out of bed at 3:30 a.m. one
morning, wondering what was happening. I hollered for
help from my dad who happened to be asleep across the
hall. I'd had a stroke and was life-flighted to the Cleveland
Clinic. There, I found myself in and out of consciousness,
waking up in the intensive care unit (ICU). I was completely
paralyzed on my left side," Haskins said.
She relearned how to walk and how to do almost everything.
"Recovery has been a difficult journey, but it has made
me more grateful as a person. I am grateful for each new
day and thankful I'm still here with a purpose to fulfill,"
Haskins added.
In autumn, Haskins' neurologist asked her to participate
in a panel discussion at the Cleveland Clinic's 14th Annual
Practical Management of Stroke conference for medical
professionals in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. "I felt honored
to share my experience with those who played such a
significant role in my recovery. My husband, Eric Haskins,
mail center supervisor, corporate office, also participated
and added insight from the caregiver's perspective. It was
truly a rewarding experience," Haskins said.
