STEWARDSHIP We make the world around us better. STOCK SUBSCRIPTION A SUCCESS The Davey Company held its fifth ever stock subscription in company history in August. This year's stock subscription is the most successful ever, as it received the highest number of employees subscribing to the largest number of shares. Turn to page 5 to learn more about the stock subscription. PULLING TOGETHER A massive windstorm swept across the Great Lakes region and through parts of Canada earlier this summer, causing massive damage to trees and property. Utility and Residential services employees across Canada responded quickly to help their clients and communities recover from this intense storm – winds reached maximum gusts of 118 mph in Ottawa. Turn to page 7 to learn more about how Davey Canada employees pulled together. WESTERN INNOVATIONS Two stories in this Bulletin issue showcase how operations on the West Coast are working in innovative ways to serve their clients. Battery-powered tools are being incorporated into utility line clearance pole test and treat work for several utility clients in southern California. These tools have numerous benefits and offer multiple improvements over their traditional gas-powered counterparts. Turn to page 10 to learn how the Davey Tree Surgery Company uses electric tools. Machine learning – a form of artificial intelligence that uses algorithms and statistical models to make predictions – is being applied by Davey Resource Group as employees count trees in San Diego. Turn to page 8 to learn how machines are being taught to identify trees. CALLING ALL CLIMBERS An impressive number of Davey employees have taken part in regional and national climbing competitions this summer and fall. On pages 18 and 19, we cover many of the climbing competitions that have already taken place this year. Some events were held after this Bulletin issue published or are happening later this year, so look for more climbing competition coverage in the November/December Bulletin. CORPORATE ADDITION PROGRESSING Construction is progressing fast on the third-wing addition being built at the corporate office in Kent. Exterior work is nearly done and interior work, including finishing and furniture installation, is well under way. The third-wing is on schedule to open this fall.
