THE DAVEY BULLETIN
Dedicated in 1990, the Davey Woods natural area continues
to thrive as one of the best remaining stands of old-growth
forest land in Ohio.
Preservation of the 103-acre maple and beech forest
started in 1988, when Davey made a grant to The Nature
Conservancy to purchase the woods from a family who
had owned it for four decades. Additional partners involved
in acquiring or maintaining the property included The Ohio
Division of Natural Areas and Preserves and The Ohio
Department of Natural Resources.
Davey Woods is an example of the extensive forests that
once were prevalent in Ohio and throughout the Midwest.
Tree species that can be found in Davey Woods include:
sugar maple, shagbark hickory, red oak, cherry, blackgum
and buckeye, among many others.
