STEWARDSHIP
SAFER FUTURE FOR TREASURED PAST
A piece of early North American history is safer today
thanks to the volunteer work of employees from Hartney
Greymont, a Davey company.
A two-person crew from the Needham office pruned
deadwood for safety in the trees above the Fairbanks
House, the oldest known wooden structure in North
America. The U.S. National Register of Historic Places dates

the house, located in Dedham, Massachusetts, as having
been built between 1637 and 1641 by the Fairbanks family
after they emigrated from England.
Matt Stobbart, sales arborist, said the house and property
is maintained in part through in-kind donations of services
and volunteers.
"We have done some plant health care for them in the past,
but I don't think we've ever done any significant tree work,"
Stobbart said. "We performed safety deadwood pruning in a
picnic area and around the parking lot. It was a special thing
to help preserve one of our nation's treasures by keeping
the property maintained and safe so people can enjoy it."

work at the property earned media

I tend to take the new guys under my wing to
foster their skills. Some people want to just get
out there and climb, and often when they get up
into the tree, they get intimidated and lose focus
or shut down. You have to be patient, both as a
leader and as a climber.
