EXPERTISE
INAUGURAL 'WINTER SEASON OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING'
The Davey Institute did not let COVID-19 derail its
commitment to the education and training of Davey's
employees. Institute staff used it as an opportunity to
create the "Winter Season of Education and Training,"
which resulted in virtual education and training opportunities
spanning from mid-January through early March.
DAILY DOSES
A large component to the Winter Season of Education
and Training were the 45 days of Daily Doses. The Institute
invited content experts from across the company to give a
live presentation each weekday at 1 p.m. that were available
to all employees to attend via Microsoft Teams.
The purpose of the Daily Doses was to reach and educate
field level employees on a variety of topics. If employees
could not attend the live sessions, a recording of each
session was uploaded to the Davey's Learning Management
System within 24 hours and can be accessed at any time
for future reference.
The idea was to keep the Daily Doses bite-sized in length
(20 to 30 minutes) and the topics diverse so there was a
little something for everyone. In the first four weeks, the
Daily Doses received roughly 2,000 views.
"I really wanted our employees coming away from the
Daily Doses with a better understanding of the various
services Davey provides, to discover something new
about Davey they didn't know before and to learn about
the resources available to them," said Mike Veney, manager,
Sustainability and Environment. "We want employees to
know the Institute is here to help and that we have all of
these experts you can reach out to if you have questions
or need guidance."
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
One objective for the training season was to get employees
to use Davey's Learning Management System (LMS).
"The Winter Season of Education and Training is a fantastic
way for us to engage with employees," said Dr. Rachel
Foot, manager of online content. "It highlights the fact that
the LMS contains a variety of educational content that can
be studied on an employee's own schedule to meet their
individual professional development needs."
Throughout the season, each week featured a highlighted
course on the LMS. This included one or more existing
courses on the LMS employees could explore. The courses
covered a variety of topics and provided opportunities to
earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
Foot is hopeful employees who need job-related training will
first check the LMS library, which is continually updated.
"We hope at the end of the season employees will continue
to use the LMS," Foot said. "We are open to feedback.
If people have questions or training needs, please reach
out to us. We want to hear what you need."
