31 September/October 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN guarantee to the client that Davey would stand behind its work and took some inspiration from The Care of Trees. The merger brought with it processes that were definitely looked at as competitive advantages and elements that the Davey R/C service line was able to integrate to help grow and strengthen the DaveyCare model, said Peters, who joined TCOT in 1990. "I was in R/C services at the time of the merger, and I think I was able to help grow some of our younger arborists into that mindset to be more client-relationship focused as opposed to just taking orders," Peters said. "When you have that kind of atmosphere, it forces your mindset really to think about relationships both internal and external, with the people you work with as well as with clients." Kathy Hendricksen, manager, business development and client services, worked nearly her entire life at TCOT in the corporate office and came to Davey through the 2008 merger. She watched proudly as many components of TCOT culture, including a focus on internal and external client service, made the transition to Davey. "We were always trained, and I trained my staff as well, to understand that if the local offices needed help, we would try to be as responsive as we could be in the corporate office," she said. "By providing a helpful response to the folks within the local office we were supporting their efforts to provide an excellent, external client response. We really would focus on both the internal client and the external client." Like Kathy Hendricksen, Sue Bennett has enjoyed seeing how TCOT culture has influenced approaches at Davey. Bennett joined TCOT in 1991 and helped overhaul it's marketing practices. Bennett said marketing advances made at TCOT, including digital advertising, public relations, client demographic analyses and other efforts were all designed to support the local sales arborists. "Some of the things we put in place at TCOT we're still doing at Davey," said Bennett, manager, marketing analytics. "The biggest shift we implemented was coordinated, centralized marketing support. This allowed offices to focus on technical expertise and providing exceptional client service." Such endeavors centered on people – whether the employees or clients – and providing the best experience. Hendricksen said one of the biggest reasons he merged with Davey was the opportunities it provided his employees to grow. "Some companies aren't committed to personal and professional growth," he said. "Both Davey and TCOT are."
