7 July/August 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN 10 11: INNOVATIVE HAND WASHING PUMP The Victoria Residential office crafted and installed portable hand washing systems on every truck in the territory to assist with proper hygiene practices during the coronavirus pandemic. The system consists of a foot pedal that, when pressed by a boot, forces clean water and sanitizer through hoses which hang from the side of their Davey trucks. It provides a hands-free, easy-to-install and operate cleaning method for all crew members. 7: VIRTUAL 'KIDFEST' Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Barrington Park District in Illinois had to move their annual KidFest into the virtual world. Normally, Davey would host a kids' climb, but this year, the Barrington office hosted a "booth" on the Park District's Facebook page, which reached more than 1,400 people. Paulette Lopez, community engagement coordinator, Felicia Speranske, sales representative, and Ryan Sherman, assistant district manager, posted in their virtual "booth" activities provided by the corporate communications team for children and families to do at home, including an activity-based Bingo card, scavenger hunt, and nature-oriented crafts, along with information about Davey's local services. 9: HAND SANITIZER FOR UTILITY TRUCKS Seeking to keep utility crews safe, Laura Wimer, director of client experience, Eastern Utility services, contacted a company in Warren, Ohio, that produced hand sanitizer. The company, FattyCakes Soap Company, had provided soap and hand sanitizer to a local nursing home, and Wimer contacted the owner, Leslie Dunlap (who's also an internationally certified sterilization technician), who ensured a bulk order of small bottles for roughly 1,800 employees and all Eastern Utility services trucks. 8: MEALS FOR HOSPITAL PERSONNEL In May, Commercial Landscape Services' Richmond territory donated lunch from Carter's Pig Pen to the staff at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Robert Bunch, branch manager, and Jessica Teabo, coordinator, delivered the trays of food to awaiting medical staff working the front lines at the center to thank them for their dedication and sacrifice during the COVID-19 outbreak. 10: DONATING FOOD AND ENCOURAGEMENT Beth Silverman, senior marketing associate, WSSI, and her daughters, Catherine and Caroline, packed 50 kits for people experiencing homelessness in the Richmond, Virginia, area. The kits, distributed by local non-profits Homeward and the Richmond Behavioral Health Foundation, included water, snacks, and a handwritten note of encouragement ("Stay safe," "You matter," and "You're not alone"). Silverman said her family has been doing outreach projects with people experiencing homelessness for several years and plan to continue making kits throughout the summer. "We believe each person deserves to be acknowledged – not overlooked – and access to food, clean water, and shelter, regardless of their circumstances, as well as social services for support," she said. 11 8 9 7
