6 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2020 1 2 3 4 6 2 2: CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL PPE DONATION In early May, Davey's corporate office donated 4,000 neck gaiters and 1,000 surgical masks to Akron Children's Hospital, a client of Commercial Landscape Services. The donation helped provide extra protection for patients, families and staff when visiting the facility. "We sincerely appreciate Davey's rapid response to support (the hospital) during a time of great need," said Shelly Brown, executive director and vice president of development at the Akron Children's Hospital Foundation. 1: EQUINE COMPANION As the coronavirus started to shut the world down, Lauren Hissam, coordinator, Davey Resource Group, was thankful for her horse, Kandi. "Even though she's not at my house, I still have to go to the barn several times a week to take care of her." The barn in Waterford, Pennsylvania, is small, making social distancing easy. Hissam and Kandi earned several ribbons in the halter classes at the Western Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association Show. 4: HOSPITAL CIRCUIT CARE Davey Resource Group's utility vegetation management specialists in the Northeast U.S. increased vegetation management patrols of primary circuits feeding power into hospitals in Salisbury, Maryland, to help avoid power outages during the coronavirus pandemic. Maintaining vital electric infrastructure to emergency health care facilities is a top priority, and DRG is using real-time software to coordinate a plan with line clearance crews for pruning if necessary. 3: DIGITAL CAREER DAY In years' past, Emmett Shutts, regional skills trainer, has volunteered in-person with climbing demonstrations at his son's elementary school for career day. This year, because the school hosted a virtual career day, Shutts submitted a video of himself, shot in his own backyard, explaining the importance of trees, what an arborist does and how to become one. He even demonstrated safe climbing techniques that arborists use when removing a dead branch from his tree. 5 : THANKING FIRST RESPONDERS Davey's Suffolk Commercial Landscape Services territory put a large "thank you" to first responders sign in their front yard, which was recognized by the City of Suffolk's Department of Fire & Rescue. Chris Dempsey, branch manager, said in May alone the territory donated more than 150 box lunches to the Suffolk's department, the Hampton Department of Fire and Rescue, Sentara Obici Hospital and Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View in Suffolk, Virginia. While Davey personnel wore face coverings for this photo (6-A), the firefighters pictured did not due to their need to conserve PPE for emergency response situations. 6: POLICE, FIRE GIFT CARDS SUPPORT COMMUNITY Davey's corporate office donated gift cards for coffee and locally sourced meals to the city of Kent's police and fire departments in order to support local community businesses, as well as boost morale among first responders in Davey's hometown. 5 COVID-19 ROUNDUP
