19 July/August 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN The expertise and knowledge provided by Davey has helped several Residential/Commercial (R/C) offices earn a 2019 0.0 Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) Award. Thirty-eight Davey R/C operations earned a 2019 award for having set a Total OSHA Recordable Incident Rate of 0.0 for the year. The award is bestowed by executive leadership in R/C services and recognizes offices for achieving an incident-free safety record for the calendar year. Tom Chaky, district manager, North Austin office, credits the Davey Career Development Program (CDP) booklets and The Davey Safety and Training Manual as two key resources that helped his team earn an award for the 2019 calendar year. "The Davey Safety and Training Manual, that's my best reference. I love that big, fat book," Chaky said. "It literally has every answer you could possibly need." The manual is designed to provide employees with access to current Davey safety and operational procedures and information. It incorporates the ANSI Z133 Safety Standards for Arboricultural Operations and applicable OSHA standards. The manual features 23 sections on topics ranging from PPE to job site safety. "It's a great tool," Chaky said. "I use it daily." In Knoxville, crews at Cortese Tree also rely heavily on the CDP booklets and the safety and training manual. Nicholas St. Sauveur, district manager, Cortese Tree, said the CDP booklets are a focal point for his crews from the first day they start. "The foreman is responsible for going over and training each employee on the skills in those books," St. Sauveur said. "And then the employee signs off on it saying they've been trained, the foreman signs off on it, and the way we do it in our office is they sit down with me and I drill them to ensure they've been properly trained to our standards. Only at that point will they get my signature certifying their skillset. It's like triple-checking to make sure our teams have the skills needed to perform safely and within our policies." Outside Chicago, in the Near North Shore office, district manager Scott Lieber said he relies on the manuals, regional training offerings and tools such as the Close Call Communicator to keep his crews working safely. "So, it's trying to use as many resources provided to us as possible from corporate and our region," Lieber said. "The other thing too is making sure you have good camaraderie. When everybody has that, they like each other and they're happy to work with each other, will take more caution in wanting to protect everybody else as well as yourself. So, it's building up a good team atmosphere and wanting people to come into work and not only do the jobs and do them well, but do them safely."
