26 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2020 Alex Spoly, project manager, Davey Resource Group, took her lumberjill woodchopping skills to the Land Down Under for her first time competing in the Tasmanian Christmas Woodchopping Circuit in Australia. Spoly won the handicap underhand chop 11" block. This was her most memorable moment during the circuit. She placed 6th in the Women's World Title Underhand Championship, which is very prestigious and was located at the Silverdome in Launceston, Tasmania. She competed in this event right after she got off the plane. She also competed with Daniel Beams in the Jack and Jill Double-Handed Sawing Championship. They placed fifth. She placed third in crosscutting and fourth in underhand chops. "I'm passionate about this sport. I truly had the opportunity of a lifetime and I enjoyed every minute of it," she said. "I'm very grateful and thankful to have the support of the Davey Resource Group." Congratulations Alex! Davey received the Environmental Education Award from the Portage Park District Foundation. This award is part of the foundation's 2020 Environmental Conservation Awards. Davey won the award because of our commitment to environmental education within the Kent community and Portage County. Some examples include our support for the Kent Roosevelt High School's Forestry and Landscape Management program, sponsorship and participation in the American Heart Association's STEM Goes Red for Girls Portage County event, the adoption of the John Davey arboretum and more. This award will be presented to Davey at the Environmental Awards Dinner in September. Congratulations! IN THE SPOTLIGHT Greg Snowden, principal consultant, Davey Resource Group, was appointed to a one-year term as an at-large representative for the Society of Ecological Restoration's Midwest-Great Lakes Chapter board of directors. As an at-large representative, Snowden will provide region-wide expertise on matters of ecological restoration and related discussion that arise during meetings of the board and chapter. At a broader level, he will support the mission of SER's Midwest-Great Lakes Chapter. New information from the field of restoration ecology, including cutting edge science, best management practices or applications of new technology, can help clients and improve project outcomes on sites that Davey designs, implements, and/or manages. "I believe we have a moral obligation to improve our planet for future generations; restoration of degraded natural areas will undoubtedly serve as a central tool to accomplish this lofty but critical goal," he said. "Supporting SER and the MWGL Chapter as a board member will help to ensure this vision becomes reality." Congratulations Greg! Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning administration, has been elected to serve a second term on the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) board of directors. The NCEO is a non-profit membership and research organization founded in 1981 to provide objective, reliable information on employee ownership to businesses, employees and the public. Reid began her first term on the board in 2017. Congratulations, Sandee! Whitney Randolph, project manager, corporate communications, accepted the Communications Award of the Year from Junior Chamber International Ohio on behalf of the Kent Jaycees. The Kent Jaycees won the award for their communications work in 2019, which includes internal communication, social media and all other forms of external communication. Randolph serves as the Kent Jaycees' public relations director. The Kent Jaycees is a young professional's organization, ages 18-40, that works together to strengthen the community and provides professional growth opportunities. "The Kent Jaycees do a fantastic job not only communicating with each other, but also with the Kent community," Randolph said. "It's been exciting to use my social media skills to help them promote the great work we do within the community. It truly is the best work of life." Great job, Whitney!
