8 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2019 Climbing is an essential daily skill needed for many crews at Davey Tree. Throughout the year, those skills are put to the test during climbing competitions hosted by International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) chapters around North America. These events showcase industry athletes while educating the public about professional tree work and the training and expertise it requires to be done safely. Most competitions feature preliminary rounds simulating tree care work-related tasks, including aerial rescues, speed and work climbs, and throw line accuracy. ITCC MASTERS' CHALLENGE SPONSOR Davey sponsored the final round, the Masters' Challenge, of the 2019 International Tree Climbing Competition (ITCC). Held in Lakeshore Park in Knoxville, Tennessee, the competition drew 75 competitors from 21 countries, setting a record for participation. The August event was hosted by the ISA Southern Chapter. Congratulations to Masters' Challenge winners Josephine Hedger (New Zealand chapter) and Scott Forrest (United Kingdom + Ireland chapter). SUPPORTING NATCC Davey also sponsored the Masters' Challenge of the 2019 North American Tree Climbing Championshiop (NATCC), held in mid-October in Balboa Park, located in San Diego, California. Forty of the top climbers from the U.S., Canada and Mexico competed. That number included Alex Julius, employee development and safety training specialist, who took 9th in the overall female rankings, and Christian Feichtinger, foreman, South Minneapolis office, who took 19th in the overall male rankings. ROCKY MOUNTAIN COMPETITION The Fort Collins R/C office had 6 competitors in the Rocky Mountain Chapter Tree Climbing Competition, held in Denver, Colorado, in July. They were Alex Cholas, Torin Harris, John McDonald, Jake Sickmond, Costas Sofianos and Cody Zimmerman. Ryan Decker, Alec Montelongo, Jack Lauhoff and Jason Park from Fort Collins, as well as Craig Marchinkoski from the North Denver R/C office, volunteered. Cholas placed 13th overall in his first time competing and took 3rd in the throwline event. Zimmerman took 3rd in the belayed speed climb women's division. North and South Denver offices donated bucket trucks to help with setup. CANADA CLIMBERS COMPETE John Ransom, area manager, R/C services, Ontario, Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada, Limited, competed in the Ontario Tree Climbing Championship held at LaSalle Park in Burlington, Ontario, on Sept. 21. Ransom placed second in the aerial rescue challenge and ninth overall in the competition. The Hamilton and Burlington offices provided support at the competition. Shawn Nixon, Nich Spino, Steve McDonald and Jenna DeAbreu volunteered from the Burlington office. The volunteers from the Hamilton office were Kyle Wood, Alex East, Todd Jordan and Jordan Milmine. Davey Tree Canada also provided water for students and volunteers at the second annual Algonquin College, Urban Forestry-Arboriculture Tree Climbing Championship at the Waterfront Campus. Arboriculture students competed in a five-event competition that simulated an ISA tree climbing championship. Darren Corbelli, assistant district manager, Ottawa office, represented Davey at the competition.
