26 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2019 TREE HONORS PRESCHOOL STUDENT The Canton R/C office donated a tree to Greenwood Early Learning Center in Green, Ohio, in memory of a 3-year-old boy who passed away. Erica Bauer, wife of Kevin Bauer, operations manager, Eastern Utility, and counselor at the school, contacted Jeff Wernet, district manager, to see if his office would be willing to donate the tree. The office planted a rising sun redbud tree outside the boy's preschool classroom. "It was a privilege to be involved in preserving this little boy's memory," Wernet said. This is the rising sun redbud planted in memory of the little boy. The tree is visible from the classroom window. Erica Bauer expressed that this will be a treasured memorial for the school, staff and students. OK, more like 5 yards. But to the students, many of whom had never been to the beach, the teachers said, the sand was paradise and an opportunity to make sandcastles. Todd Thrasher, business manager, Houston territory, Commercial Landscape Services, and Valentin Flores, landscape technician, used a skid-steer to make smaller piles of the donated bank sand. "The smiles on their faces was the best recognition we could get. It feels good to give back, knowing that it makes a difference in our community, even if it's a little sand," said Thrasher. "One teacher told us that many of the students have behavioral issues, but that day was the first this year they went a whole day without a problem." Davey's Houston CLS crews volunteered to relocate the large amount of donated sand, making it easier for students to play, build and have fun. LEADERSHIP
