22 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2019 RODEO PREPS DRIVERS FOR A CDL Fifteen Davey employees from Eastern Utility and Commercial Landscape Services benefitted from a driving program, held in August in Kent. Similar to a driving test, complete with vehicle inspections and road testing, the rodeo-style day focused on "For years I've learned by doing. This training is a hands-on opportunity to help out my crews by applying what I already know to eventually get a CDL and help others learn," said Brenda Hartle, landscape crew leader, Cincinnati territory. IMPROVEMENT Fifteen Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) supervisors attended the four-day Advanced Leadership Training program at the Davey Institute in August. Attendees took part in a variety of presentations and training sessions led by managers and executives in the corporate office on topics including safety, Davey Institute support, effective management skills and leadership. CLS employees who attended the program included Richard Bryant, Alexandria territory; Jonnathon Clayton, Suffolk territory; Andrew Cosby, Richmond territory; Brett Crowe, Minneapolis territory; Darrel Cruz, Yorktown territory; David Dillon, Cleveland East territory; Milton Franco, Alexandria territory; Richard Koogle, Montgomery County territory; Chris Phillips, Alexandria territory; Joshua Schoenherr, Cincinnati territory; Michael Sigler, Suffolk territory; Justin Slusher, Cincinnati territory; Felipe Small, Tampa territory; Clemy Villafana, Naples territory; and Edward Yambor, Cleveland West territory Thirty-seven Utility services employees from 18 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces attended the Davey Institute of Utility Sciences, held at the Davey Institute in August. Designed to help employees learn how to address the utility needs of clients, communities and coworkers, D.I.U.S. is five days of intensive, hands-on education and training. Indoor and outdoor sessions include safe use of equipment and worksite planning skills, client experience skills, recruiting and training techniques and more. Davey utility employees who attended the training were Wendy Austin, Hunter Braciszewski, Lenette Crenshaw, Roy Croka, Steven Davis, Scott Duvall, Jeffrey Erl, Jason Guthrie, Cody Heflin, Robert Huttick, John Ide, Steven Imbeault, Gary Jones, Timothy Kalgren, Brian MacIntosh, Camden Matthews, Clif McCaulou, Jeremy McGirr, Robert McGuire, Nelson Medina, Brandon Miller, Curtis Morgan, Lucas Myzel, Chris Peppinger, Chloe Poole, Jose Salinas, Jon Sapienza, Marc Sargent, Travis Scism, Luis Serrano, Annie Stover, Allan Torio, Adrian Vela, Robert Werner and Sean Wine. boosting morale among the drivers while advancing the skills needed to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, which is now required to operate some larger Utility and CLS vehicles, while focusing on Davey's safety and professional driving skills.
