For the fifth year, Davey sent various crews from across the country to 17 different military sites for Saluting Branches: Arborists United for Veteran Remembrance. While millions of Americans pay their respects at national and state veterans' cemeteries and properties, Saluting Branches brings together expert arborists to improve the beauty and safety of the trees located in those sites. This year, Davey crews added to the $3.8 million in donated services by helping prune trees and bushes, identifying tree species for inventories, installing cables and bracing, laying mulch, removing hazard limbs and even entire trees. "This day is a way of showing support and thanking those who have served and are serving our country," said Nicholas Sousa, forestry consultant, Davey Resource Group. "Without these heroic men and women we could not have our great lives." The day even saw Davey retirees joining in to give back. Daniel McGrath, retired sales arborist, Albany office, said he served 20 years with U.S. Military Police and wanted to give back to those who died serving his country. This was McGrath's fourth year volunteering at the event. "Tending to trees that decorate these veterans' cemeteries is a tangible way for the tree care industry to give back to those who served this country," said Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning administration. "Saluting Branches is an opportunity to ensure these honorable places remain beautiful and safe for families and visitors."
