13 November/December 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN HISTORIC MANSION GROUNDS GET FACELIFT Visibility of Blandwood Mansion improved when Davey's Greensboro Residential/Commercial office pruned the property's trees. Blandwood is a National Historic Landmark and open house museum. The house is located on a full city block in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. The trees on the property hadn't been pruned in some time and over the years they started to obscure the view of the house, said Benjamin Briggs, executive director of Preservation Greensboro. "The majority of the pruning was light, but some of the trees had grown up over the past 15 or 20 years that hadn't had much work done to them," Briggs said. "Their growing habits needed to be corrected, so they are better prepared structurally for mid-life." The pruning not only added to the visibility of the house when people drive past, but it helped create unobstructed views of the stage during outdoor musical events held on the front lawn. Raising the tree canopy also improved grass growth because of the increased sunlight to the lawn. There was some erosion happening from lack of grass. Briggs said there have only been positive comments about the work. "We've had comments that the trees look more appropriate," Briggs said. "The sight lines of the house have improved as people drive by. We don't have to give special directions to people trying to find us because of the trees being in the way. It's been a win, win all around." The funding for the pruning work was donated by CT Wilson Construction to Preservation Greensboro. "We have a long-standing relationship with Davey, and we knew that you do great work," Briggs said. "We're happy to continue that relationship." Visibility and the grounds are important to the narrative of Blandwood. The grounds were showcased in a woodcut in the 1840s and 1850s by the preeminent American landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing. Proctored by a Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) trainer, the CTSP coursework enhances candidates' skills in four key areas: leadership, hazard control and prevention, incident control and prevention, and adult learning. It is the only safety credentialing program specific to the tree care industry. Daniel Baster, trimmer, Glades Electric account, said the sessions were an opportunity to improve and learn new management and communication skills that are essential for his growth at Davey. "In this line of work, safety has to come first. Then you can focus on efficiency and the other demands of the job," Baster said. Skills Trainer Elias Cortez said he appreciated the role-playing sessions and learning how different communication styles can affect how individuals learn differently – and how to overcome barriers to success. "As a skills trainer, I appreciate Attendees included Michael Ashe, John Barabas, Daniel Baster, Jordan Bourcier, Patrick Brennan, Korie Butler, Matt Buza, Jake Colliander, Elias Cortez, Harold Danielson, Derek Dykins, Robert Ellis, David Gamble, Eli Geist, Patrick Glennon, David Hayes, James Jane, Tim Kerns, Devin Kowalski, Karl Krauskopf, Zachary La Combe, John LaPorte, William LaRock, Timothy Marino, Steve Matravers, Michael McCann, Bryant Merkley, Matt Millette, Randy Mueller, Christopher "CJ" Nichols, John Rowan, Brian Sneed, Mark Solada, Nicholas St. Sauveur, Mike Walters and Ryan Zieche. every opportunity to bring safety skills back to our crews. Safety is important because we want our people to go home to a happy family at the end of each day," he said. SAFETY
