3 January/February 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP Matt Fredmonsky This year Davey employees get to celebrate a milestone. It's been 40 years since an ambitious group of employees bought The Davey Tree Expert Company from the descendants of John Davey. In those past four decades, the company has seen tremendous success beyond perhaps anything the Davey family might have expected. To help celebrate, the Bulletin team will be doing a few things. First, we'll share some history about Davey as an employee-owned company in our "From the Archives" features in select issues for 2019. We will also be sharing your opinions about what employee-ownership means to you and how you believe it affects operations. Look for your colleagues' thoughts in the "Owner's Box" features spread throughout each issue. Lastly, the cover of each issue in 2019 will bear a small reminder of this excellent anniversary. So, take a moment and celebrate! Davey is one of the largest and most successful employee-owned firms in North America, and that's certainly something to be proud of. OUR STORIES, OUR VALUES Something else new in 2019, we're changing the way stories are labeled in the Bulletin. Now you'll see stories under new labels, which reflect the six core values, the vision and mission statements of the Davey Company. These new color-coded labels, explained in the graphic to the right of this column, identify stories that show a territory, office, crew or employee who exemplifies one or more of these characteristics. As always, we want your story ideas. So, if you have a story that falls under one of those eight labels, tell us about it! Continue sending them via email to bulletin@davey.com or by calling me at 800-447-1667 ext. 8615. But we may also reach out to your operations manager or supervisor. We'll be asking them for ways your team can help strengthen Davey culture by telling a story about our values, mission or vision. Be ready to tell your Davey story, and keep it safe! DOING WHAT WE DO BEST For this issue, there is no one unifying theme tying all the stories together. Instead, inside you'll find a collection of features that highlight what, at your core, Davey employees do best. One story highlights our work to plant hundreds of trees. Another lauds the dedication of employees responding to a hurricane recovery. Still others extoll our employees' technical expertise, affinity for nature (saving bees) and an ever-present willingness to give back to the communities we serve. Perhaps this issue's theme is as simple as "Do it right or not at all." ROOT OF THE ISSUE MISSION: Deliver unmatched excellence in client experience, employee strength, safety and financial sustainability as we advance the green industry. LEADERSHIP is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. IMPROVEMENT is defined as the action of improving or being improved. INTEGRITY is defined as being honest and having strong moral principles. SAFETY at Davey emphasizes the fundamental respect we have for our employees, clients, the public and the environment. All other departments in the Bulletin, such as "Letters" or "Service Awards," will get the "Davey green" label. EXPERTISE is defined as having expert skill or knowledge in a particular field. VISION: Provide solutions that promote balance among people, progress and the environment. RESOLVE is defined as having a firm determination to accomplish something.
