FIELD NOTES
GO GREEN RACER, GO!
Dan Joy returned to his roots
this summer.
No, Joy wasn't doing tree work. He
did get behind the wheel of a Davey
vehicle. But instead of a bucket truck,
Joy steered a derby car down the hill
at the famed Derby Downs in Akron,
Ohio, home to The All-American
Soap Box Derby.
Joy, vice president and general
manager, Commercial Services,
spent three years competing in soap
box derby races in his youth.
"It was a good experience for me as
a kid," he said. "That's where I first
learned how to use mechanic's tools."
Davey was one of several entrants
in the Corporate Derby Challenge,
which invited businesses to field cars
as a fundraiser for the United Way of
Summit County. Proceeds benefitted
the soap box derby's scholarship fund

"
I started working with
Davey at 19 under
Dan Morgan. He saw
potential in me. I left
the company after 6
months because I got
a better job offer. He
kept in contact with
me, and he ended up
bringing me back. He
pushed me through
DIGM, Plant Health
Care, advanced
leadership and now
D.I.T.S. He didn't push
Davey as a small
company. He pushed
it as, we are a family.
Everyone works
together, and we make
sure everyone is taken
care of on a day-to-
day basis.

and underserved youth in area soap
box derby programs. The corporate
derby preceded the annual soap
box derby, which was held the
following weekend.
Davey employees Mike Boyle,
assistant shop supervisor, Aaron
Lowther, mechanic, and Don Williams,
warehouse administrator, at the
Kent Shop built two Davey derby
cars. Joy piloted one while Craig
Holcomb, vice president, operations
support, drove the second car, which
was shaped like a Davey box truck.
Holcomb was eliminated in the second
round, and Joy nearly made it to the
final four cars.
"It's a fun event," Joy said. "Davey
has been associated with the United
Way for a long time. This is a good,
local event Northeast Ohio is known
for, and it's good for Davey to have a
presence there."
