HELPING CREATE A
NATURE AREA
When you get the chance to help children in the community
connect with nature, you do it. While consulting on a client's
property that backed up to a common space across from
the local elementary school, Natalie McNeill, district
manager of Davey's Fort Collins R/C office, was approached
for some advice.
"Joan Hill, the woman in charge of the Nature Area project
for Bennett Elementary, came over and asked my advice
on some of the trees that were around the garden in the
common space and began to explain the project she was
working on," McNeill said.
McNeill walked with her over to the site and noticed there
were three Siberian elm trees around the space that needed
to come down and offered to remove the trees for free.
After the trees were removed, the crew also chipped them
and left the mulch to be used for the school's nature area.
Since then, McNeill has maintained contact with Hill by
advising her on what types of trees would be best to
plant in that area, how to incorporate low water usage
plants and more.
"The workers were excellent," Hill said. "It was a
tremendously helpful contribution to our project!"
Bennett Elementary School is embarking on a new project to provide
the students with a nature area where they can participate in caring
for the space and spend more time outdoors.
SUPPORTING A LOCAL FOOD BANK
Four Davey Resource Group employees teamed up with
volunteers from PPL Electric Utilities and Penn Line to
help the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Williamsport,
Pennsylvania.
In two hours, Dustin Rhoades, project coordinator, Matt
Bartholomew, utility vegetation management technician,
Andrew Gonzales, utility vegetation management technician,
and Ty Buffington, utility vegetation management technician,
helped pack 890 boxes, which is one-third of the food bank's
monthly quota. This food bank serves 13 counties in North
Central Pennsylvania.
"It was a good team building experience to be able to
come together to do something for the community,"
Rhoades said.
They plan to volunteer at the food bank again this summer.
