7 July/August 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN A FIRST ARBOR DAY Copley Township, Ohio, took its first step toward becoming a Tree City USA by celebrating its first Arbor Day. Joe Gregory, regional operations manager, Davey Resource Group, is a member of the township's architectural review board. He has been navigating the township through the National Arbor Day Foundation's process for becoming a Tree City USA. Gregory helped facilitate a partnership between Copley-Fairlawn City Schools and the township to officially celebrate Arbor Day. To do so, the township trustees wrote a proclamation and purchased a London planetree to plant at Arrowhead Primary School's "Nature Zone," which is an outdoor learning venue. The township also sponsored a poster contest, with its theme being "A New Tree for Copley." The winners of the poster contest each received a white pine seedling. Joe Gregory's daughter Katy is a kindergartener at Arrowhead Primary School. Gregory remembers celebrating Arbor Day in elementary school and wanted his daughter to have the same opportunity. He decided to connect Copley Township with Copley-Fairlawn City Schools to host and celebrate Arbor Day. GIVING BACK TREE BENEFITS TO PHILLY NEIGHBORHOOD Davey Resource Group's (DRG) Brice Dorwart, contract utility forester, and Beth Pellechia, contract utility forester, for the PECO/Exelon account, planted street trees during a community tree planting hosted by the Philly Tree People (PTP). The community planting was held on Earth Day in an underserved neighborhood of Philadelphia called Kensington. PTP is planting trees in Brice Dorwart encourages fellow arborists and other Davey employees to seek out volunteer opportunities on Earth Day or Arbor Day because local organizations are always looking for volunteers. Gregory said the township is positioned to continue with their first Tree City USA application, and he will continue to walk them through the steps. the neighborhood to improve aesthetics, provide shade and create more wildlife habitat, Dorwart said. Dorwart's favorite part of the day was teaching people how to plant trees the right way. "Hopefully, they will take that knowledge with them for a future planting," he said. Pellechia's highlight from the planting was speaking to homeowners who requested trees be planted in front of their homes. "They reached out to Philly Tree People, wanted it to happen and they got to see it come to fruition," he said. "They were really grateful." "The event was a great success," Gregory said. "Hopefully, it will be a lasting Copley tradition to celebrate Arbor Day." Copley Township sponsored a poster contest, with a theme of "A New Tree for Copley," and 105 white pine tree seedlings were given away to the students that participated in the contest.
