18 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2018 MY DAVEY SAFETY EDITION: LEARN IT. SHARE IT. Meet Mike Tucker, who's worked at Davey for over 15 years. He's a general foreman on the PG&E Sierra Nevada account, Davey Tree Surgery Company. Even with all his experience, Tucker knows you have to stay sharp and keep learning. "There's always more training out there. It's a great advantage to keep learning more so that you're not behind the times," Tucker said. That's why he was excited when he was nominated to go to a Davey-exclusive Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) workshop. Tucker, along with his fellow Davey employees, met for two days in March in Livermore, California. Attendees met with a Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) trainer to learn strategies and tactics for nurturing a safety culture. Specifically, they focused on leadership, hazard control and prevention, incident control and prevention and adult learning. Tucker's biggest takeaway from the training was trying to explain new concepts to adults in a way they'd understand. Specifically, he learned the importance of asking open-ended questions that require more than a yes or no response. At the end of the training, Tucker walked out of the classroom with lots of new tips and tricks – and a sparkling new certification. But, that was actually just the start of the process. "The value of the program isn't the certificate. The value is when CTSPs go back to their operations and share what they learned about improving the safety culture," said Tim Walsh, safety manager, corporate safety department. "Being a CTSP is all about what you do with that knowledge when you walk out of the workshop." As Walsh hoped, Tucker talked about his CTSP lessons with his coworkers. Now, everything Tucker and the newly minted CTSPs learned is amplified by those they share it with, which helps foster the safety culture at Davey. And he's become one of the 255 CTSPs companywide who are leaders within Davey and the industry. Above: Davey employees listen intently during a presentation. Davey hosts numerous similar CTSP workshops.
