Planting Large Trees

May 27, 2011

Have you ever wondered how a very large tree is planted? For more information on large tree moving, visit http://www.davey.com.

Dan Howse, Davey Tree Service expert and licensed landscape architect, outlines the process - from tree selection at the nursery to transporting and planting and finally post-planting care for the large specimen live oak.

Today we’re in New Orleans on the grounds of an elementary school. We’re planting a majestic live oak. This tree is going to serve as a live classroom as well as provide the students a quiet, shady place to read.

Due to the time of year and the temperatures we’re experiencing in the South, we decided that it would be best to provide a box tree for this project. The tree was grown in a field for the first few years of its life and then moved into a box at the nursery. This tree was delivered to the site on a tractor trailer and will require a large piece of equipment to place it into the hole. Once in the ground, the tree will be guided to keep it from moving and we will install site tubes in the drainage system.

One mistake we can’t make with such a beautiful specimen is to just plant and walk away. A large tree like this will need proper aftercare for years to come. Proper watering, mulching and fertilization will be critical for its survival.

If you’re thinking of planting or relocating a large tree, it’s best to consult a professionally trained certified arborist to help you develop a plan that meets your needs.
