Tree Work Safety Practices Your Arborist Should Follow

September 22, 2009

So you’ve made the decision to hire a tree service company to provide care for your landscape. Steve Nagy, Davey Tree Service expert and ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, educates you about safe work practices. Schedule a consultation with a certified arborist by visiting http://www.davey.com/consultation. Regardless of the task, they will be on your property working on your landscape, and you want to make sure they are working safely. So what does that mean? • First, proper PPE (personal protective equipment). Are they wearing hard hats, safety glasses and ear protection? • Does their equipment appear clean and in working order, or is it worn and tattered? • Are they wearing uniforms that appear to be neat and clean? • Are they familiar with ANSI and OSHA standards? Just ask the question. If you get a blank look back, you should be concerned! • If they are using large mechanical equipment, like bucket trucks and chippers, are they experienced with it, and does the equipment appear in working order. • Perhaps most importantly, have they communicated with you about the work to be done and any risk involved? Do they have a work plan? Remember, the lowest bidder on a project is not always the safest bidder. Selecting a tree service company that works unsafely can cost you far more in the long run. A visit to the TCIA (Tree Care Industry Association) website, http://tcia.org/ , can provide you with a list of accredited tree service companies that meet industry standards for quality and safety.
